Having come to the closet door, she made a stop for some time, thinking about her husband’s orders, and considering what unhappiness might attend her if she was disobedient; but the temptation was so strong that she could not overcome it. She then took the little key, and opened it, trembling. At first she could not see anything plainly, because the windows were shut. After some moments she began to perceive that the floor was all covered over with clotted blood, on which lay the bodies of several dead women, ranged against the walls. (These were all the wives whom Blue Beard had married and murdered, one after another.) She thought she should have died for fear, and the key, which she pulled out of the lock, fell out of her hand.

On the Curious Fate of the Body of Lord Byron

“Descending the steps into the 300-year-old vault, Barber found a small room littered with bones and decaying wood. In the center stood three tiers of coffins, newer and more ornate boxes flattening the older ones beneath. At the base of the stairs, Barber noticed a 17th century infant’s coffin partially crushed by a well-preserved chest. On the lid of the chest, Barber saw a brass plate identifying the contents:

Within this urn
Are deposited
The heart and the brain
Of the deceased
Lord Noel Byron

Turning his attention to the center of the room, Barner noticed two coffins topped with coronets from which the ermine and pearls had long since disappeared. Barber believed that the two coffins belonged to Byron and Lovelace, and indeed Lovelace’s coffin still bore her ornate brass nameplate. The other coffin, wreathed in faded purple velvet and decorated with hundreds of brass nails, showed no signs of identification. To his horror, Barber discovered the lid of the anonymous coffin was loose.

“Dare I look within?” Barber wrote in his account of the evening’s events. “Yes, the world should know the truth—that the body of the great poet was there—or that the coffin was empty. Reverently, very reverently, I raised the lid, and before my eyes there lay the embalmed body of Byron in as perfect a condition as when it was placed in the coffin one hundred and fourteen years ago.”…

Excerpt from Rest in Pieces: The Curious Fates of Famous Corpses by Bess Lovejoy. Pictured above are the coffins of Lord Byron and Ada Lovelace.
